Eisenach - Sightseeings & Informations

Description

Eisenach is the main urban centre of western Thuringia, situated near the former Inner German border, located at the confluence of two rivers, the Hörsel and the Nesse. A major attraction is Wartburg castle, which has been a UNESCO world heritage site.

Eisenach

Eisenach was mentioned first time in 1180. Over the entire period of its existence, the city has experienced a huge number of falls and ups.

Wartburg Castle

Eisenach's history is closely connected with the Wartburg fortress, built in 1067. There were at least three settlements near the castle, which united into one in the second half of the 12th century. It was in the Wartburg Castle that Martin Luther translated the Bible into German, laying the foundations of the modern German language.
