The Grand Opera

The Grand Opera called by the modern French people Opera Garnier, is one of the most famous opera and ballet theatres in the world. The theatre is located in the Palais Garnier in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. The building is considered a benchmark for electrical architecture in the style of Beaux-Arts.

The Paris Opera got its modern name in 1989 after the opening of the second theatre - the Opera Bastille. Since the architect of the Grand Opera was Charles Garnier, the theatre began to be named after him. Both institutions are merged into the public-commercial enterprise “Opéra national de Paris”.

The Opera Garnier occupies 11.000 sq. m area and accommodates more than 2000 spectators, and its stage can accommodate up to 450 actors at a time. The lower floor is decorated with high arches and massive pylons. On the second floor, tall twin columns are gracefully located at the windows. The interior of the theater is no less luxurious than its facade.

One of the most famous places is the lobby of the main staircase, lined with precious marble. At the bottom of the staircase are two bronze floor lamps - female figures holding bouquets of light. The vault is decorated with frescoes by Isidore Pils, and the ceiling in the hall was painted in 1966 by Marc Chagall.

The red and gold, horseshoe-shaped auditorium is made in Italian style. The armchairs are upholstered in red velvet, and the painted fabric curtain imitates the red drapery with gold braids and tassels. The hall is illuminated by a huge crystal chandelier.
