Louvre Museum
Louvre Museum (Le Musée du Louvre) is the world's largest art museum and historical monument in Paris. This central landmark of the city is located on the right bank of the Seine in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. On an area of 72,735 square meters, about 38,000 objects are exhibited from prehistoric times to the 21st century. In 2019, the Louvre received 9.6 million visitors.
The museum is located in the Louvre Palace, originally built as a Louvre castle in the late 12-13th century under Philip II, the remains of the fortress are visible in the basement of the museum. Due to the expansion of cities, the fortress eventually lost its defensive function, and in 1546 Francis I turned it into the main residence of the French kings. The building has been expanded many times to form the current Louvre Palace.

In 1682, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles for his home, leaving the Louvre mainly as a showcase for the royal collection, including, starting in 1692, collections of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. In 1692, the building was occupied by the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Words and the Royal Academy of Sculpture, which in 1699 held the first of a series of salons. The academy remained at the Louvre for 100 years. During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be used as a museum to showcase the nation's masterpieces.
The museum opened on August 10, 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings, most of which were royal and confiscated church property. Due to structural problems with the building, the museum was closed in 1796 until 1801. The collection was enlarged under Napoleon and the museum was renamed Musée Napoléon, but after Napoleon's abdication, many of the pieces captured by his armies were returned to their original owners. The collection was further enlarged during the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X, and during the Second French Empire, the museum acquired 20,000 items. Since the Third Republic, funds have steadily increased through donations and bequests.
The collection is divided into eight curatorial sections: Egyptian Antiquities; Middle Eastern antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities; Islamic art; sculpture; decorative arts; painting; engravings and drawings.
